Works in progress: all the unfinished paintings are here!
The only regret I have about the unfinished paintings in my studio is that there aren’t MORE of them. Last week I went on a rampage in here, organizing and cleaning, clearing out and rearranging. The resulting space works so much better for me now, and I can start painting again.
I realized I was getting stuck, and it seemed to me that the energy in here needed a boost. It’s got it now, yay! My video below shows you the new improved studio and office space. But here’s a few of the works in progress first.
So far as I’m concerned, this first one, ‘Mystery’, is complete. It just needs to be adhered to cradled wood, and voila!
I love painting on paper. I work with acrylic paint, mainly, and also sometimes colored pencils, markers, crayons, ink, and collage. I’ve started mounting the completed paintings on wood to finish them off, which I really like.
I also paint on cradled wood and canvas. My preference is a smooth surface to work with, so paper and wood tend to be my preference. But canvas is lovely too! One reason for making more space in this studio is so I can start using the painting wall I have here to work on larger pieces.
As I’ve been finding a new style and way of working in my art, I’ve worked mainly on smaller scale pieces, and have sold quite a few of those. Years back, in my first round of painting, I worked on a completely different surface - clear vinyl, and stretched my own paintings. I don’t want to do that anymore, at least not now, and so my media is working for me.
A couple of weeks ago, this odd little troll doll looking character showed up. I decided to keep him, for now. He looks like a tiny magician figure to me, casting some big magical spell. We’ll see where he goes this week.
This is just two layers in, but I’m intrigued. I wanted pink and green in a piece together, and mixed some specific colors. It works, but certainly isn’t done.
This one is almost there. It needs a lot of touching up and refining, but the composition is finally more how I want it.
These two have already changed a lot. I have a feeling they will change once more. It’s a mystery!
Note: I didn’t share the abandoned, unloved, unfinished paintings stacked in the corner. Some of them may go on to become paintings I do show, but not quite yet.
Here’s a video of my new improved office and studio space:

‘Manish Arora: Life Is Beautiful’
‘Pink and gold is my religion’ — Manish Arora
This exhibit features over 80 works by India’s premiere fashion designer, Manish Arora. Also in the exhibit: a short film of Arora talking about his work, and ‘Holi Holy’, a film he made that features his fashions and is dedicated to the widows of Varanasi, who broke a centuries old tradition and celebrated Holi for the first time in 2013. This film is amazing and you can find it on YouTube.
Wow, this show is incredible! It’s happening now at SCAD FASH in Atlanta, and I highly recommend you go see it if you are going to be here. It’s on display through 9/15/24. Visit SCAD FASH online for show times and location.
We didn’t expect to see this incredible show, as we visited SCAD FASH last Sunday for the closing day of the ‘Cristobal Balenciaga’ show, which was also a treat, featuring 34 of Balenciaga’s couture pieces from throughout his career.
If you’re into costume history, as I am, this was an amazing show to see. More importantly it made me ask myself “why have I not visited SCAD FASH until now??”.
Thanks so much for subscribing and reading! Please share this newsletter with anyone you know who would like it, and thank you! Love, Kris
