The Balancing Act
New paintings happening now, and living life and making art in the in between.

Hello friends, this week I’m sharing some of what’s new in my studio. I’ve got a few new paintings being finished now, and one of them is featured in today’s newsletter.

Working on my balance
It’s been challenging to show up and paint these past weeks, while we are all in a new kind of balancing act. It’s times like these that make me so grateful to have my painting partners, and my standing Friday painting date. Even through the worst days of all of the darkness coming out of Washington, my art friends and I have shown up every most Friday mornings, laughed together, made art, consumed chocolate and tea, and listened to music. What a healing!
I became less interested in trying to finish a bunch of paintings, and more interested in staring at the unfinished works I have in my studio, and listen to what they needed. To my great surprise, suddenly I could hear them.
‘Balancing Act’ is the title of this piece that has been hanging out in my studio for several months, and was ready to complete - this past week. It’s always interesting to me how a painting gets done, and then I suddenly know it’s done. When it’s done, it’s done. It seems so sudden, all of a sudden. Then a relief - whew! I finished this piece and feel really good about it.
Then it’s time to finish-finish it, which means signature (check out my nifty new signature above), paint the sides, varnish the whole piece, and attach the hanging wire.
But then the most important bit (well, after actually completing it that is) is the TITLE. What’s it called? What’s its story, fer pete’s sake?
I will need to name a painting Fer Pete’s Sake some day, and yes, you can hold me to that.
Here’s the blurb I wrote for the story of ‘Balancing Act’: Life is about learning to balance ourselves in so many ways: emotionally, physically, financially, in our relationships, habits, and choices. When we get out of balance, which is often, we learn better ways to choose the balance that works for us.
‘Balancing Act’ is dedicated to the new ways we are learning, individually and collectively, to balance in our modern era, specifically in the year 2025.
If you’ve been following me and checking out my website, you will notice that I always have a story of some kind for my paintings, or a thoughtful write up. It’s part of what I do as an artist. I may not always do this, but I do right now and it works for me.
‘Balancing Act’ is available at KrisCahillArt.com. It’s acrylic on canvas, measuring 10” x 10” x 1.5”, and needs no framing. See its full details here.
Inspiration for creating and having balance
Make something! It doesn’t matter if what you create is beautiful or useful or makes sense. The very act of creating is what helps you bring you back to yourself, and that’s where you’ll find your balance again.
I highly recommend taking yourself on an adventure to an art supply store near you. Buy yourself a fun art tool while you’re there!
This week’s action: use your imagination for good
