Making art and telling stories.
The 'Hearts of Self Love' series continues with four new paintings. Working in a series is fun - my next series is peeking over the horizon.
As a painter, I enjoy working in a series of works along a similar theme or concept.
I’ve been working on The Hearts of Self Love Series since the start of this year. This is a series of small scale paintings, 6” x 6” on cradled wood. The four heart paintings posted here complete the first 12 pieces I’ve done in this series.
In my studio today, a stack of cradled wood that needs to be primed for the next heart pieces is standing by, waiting to become the next paintings in this grouping.
Here’s are the others from this series: 4 hearts have sold, 4 are in a shop in Atlanta called Open Door Atlanta @opendoor_atl.
Why hearts?
I was very inspired by Jim Dine’s heart art, even more so when I saw one of his heart paintings in a museum years back. I was already drawn to working with this image before I knew he worked with it too. It was fun to see another artist work with this shape and symbol in their own way, as I do in mine.
When I first started making paintings years back, one of the first images I was drawn to working with was the heart. I made a piece in 1995 called ‘Galaxy of Love’, which I later gifted to a good friend who is no longer around in body. I like to imagine my friend sailing around out in the Galaxy of Love.
Something lit up within me when I painted that first big abstract heart, and since then I’ve made hundreds of them. Though it’s been a few years since I last painted hearts - the last ones were in 2009 - I’ve recently felt the urge to bring them back.
Here’s a few Heart Paintings from the archives. These pieces were painted between 1996-2009.
I’ll continue working on the Hearts of Self Love series for a while. In the meantime, I am also working on a new series!
My next series of paintings has been patiently waiting in the wings for a time, and is now coming up fast in the rear view mirror.
Circles are the feature of this next series.
I keep painting circles in my paint journals, and really like the images I’ve discovered. I long to make them into paintings on board or canvas, larger than the current Hearts series.
