I am so grateful for art museums!
I’m grateful for the very existence of places I can go to see art.
I love galleries and museums, visiting artist’s studios and shows, and all things art. Whenever I plan a visit to another city, I scope out which museums they have, and then I go to as many of them as I can.
I can’t imagine living in a city or town without an art museum, or art scene of some kind. I grew up in Chicago, moved to Los Angeles, Portland, and now Decatur GA. Noel and I are members of the High Museum of Art, as we were members of the Portland Art Museum and LACMA when we lived in those cities.
I’ve been visiting art museums since I was very small, thanks to my parents. I’m so grateful to both of them for making sure we had access to art and books, and art supplies too. After getting over her disappointment that I had no interest in going into medicine, my mother actively encouraged me to go to art school. That made a huge difference in having the ability to see myself as an artist. So much gratitude!
This past Sunday, my husband Noel and I visited the High Museum to see the Georgia O’Keeffe show, which we both loved. There are several other shows there now which I’ll definitely be back to see soon. If you’re in Atlanta this fall-winter, do check out this show.

Atlanta is also home to the SCAD FASH museum, which I visited for the first time this summer, to see a remarkable show by Manish Arora. Currently there are two amazing shows, 'Imane Ayissi: From Africa to the World', and 'Sandy Powell's Dressing the Part: Costume Design for Film'. Wow! I loved these shows, especially the short documentary about the work of Sandy Powell.

Earlier this year, we saw the show ‘Sonya Clark: We Are Each Other’ at the High Museum, which included this ongoing group art project she created that involves over 5000 people worldwide.

No matter what is happening in the world, artists will make art.
Every time you or I visit a museum and spend time in the presence of the art others have made, we are receiving. When we go to see live music, or theater, or an improv or puppet show, or read a book we love, we are receiving. This is what humans do best - we create and heal and give, simply by making things and sharing them.
How about you? What art museums have you visited this year? Or galleries? What do you like about seeing art in person, whatever the art is?
Inspiration for Arting
Art helps your brain, according to this article posted on the NPR site right before we were all in lockdown for the pandemic in 2020. Talk about prescient!
