An end of summer tribute to the Flower Party
I learned a lot about painting from creating this series.
I believe it’s important to acknowledge all of the little steps, work, obsessions, visions, swearing, whoops of joy, negativity, and needs that take me to the next level. I’m doing so today, on this outgoing summer 2023 energy, with my series of paintings from this summer, the Flower Party series.
As much as I’ve enjoyed working with this series, I’ve also been doing the usual thing I do as an artist, judging it, doubting it, and in general forgetting how much I really loved working on each painting. Then I look at it and love it from the bottom of my heart, without needing to hang onto any of it. I want others to enjoy it in their own homes!
When I pull back from the not at all helpful self criticism, and find my gratitude for the imagery that showed up, I regain my perspective on how each painting matters, each brings me something, no matter how successful or not I believe it is.
Each one has its own energy, whether they show up in a painting experiment, or on a canvas or paper I’m completing and showing to others. They are all important, because each helped me find the next step I’m taking as an artist. There are no mistakes in this equation.
Happily, I can also use all of this to let go of needing to please anyone but myself in this equation.
This is the one that started it all.
From ‘Invitation To A Flower Party’ onward this summer, it was all about the flowers, in every painting. I knew I’d keep it going as long as it took to find the doorway to the next… whatever. This is that doorway.
I like the composition and energy of this piece. The flowers are evolving from being together in patches and groups, to finding their own space, as individual and unique flowers. There’s one painting in progress now, and a few more larger pieces on the way as well.

I’ve repriced everything to sell at very reasonable prices! I’m ready to move forward and create something new: color field paintings.
These two are new, truly the end of summer pieces:
I just found this meme and thought it delightfully appropriate for the energy I’m hoping to convey with my flowers. Now it makes me want to go back and rename each piece.
I think I may start thinking of and naming my future flower paintings according to this way of looking at things. Just maybe.
My sister in law, Janice, is a collector of mine, and very big supporter of my work. May you have such validating people for your work in your life!
She just framed and hung several pieces of mine that she owns. Here’s her photo:
Thank you Janice!
